Design a label once in Brady Workstation, then print it for any stock from your phone or tablet, right where the stock is stored.
The Labguru Mobile App connects to Brady label printers over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. You design a label template in Brady Workstation, import it into the app and match each field on the label to stock information in Labguru, such as the name, ID, lot number, expiry date or barcode. From then on, printing labels for one stock or many takes a few taps.
Brady labels are made for lab conditions. They stay readable in freezers, liquid nitrogen and other harsh storage, so your stocks stay identifiable for as long as you keep them.
What you need
- A supported Brady printer: Brady M211, M511 or M611, connected over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
- A label template designed in Brady Workstation and saved as a BWT file.
- The label wizard add-on for your Labguru account. For more information, contact our support team.
- Permissions for the app: Location and Bluetooth (on Android, Nearby devices). To find printers over Wi-Fi, Location must be turned on.

Design a template in Brady Workstation
A template sets the size and layout of your label. Fields that should show stock information must be placeholders, so the app can fill them in for each stock you print.
- In Brady Workstation, choose your printer and label supply, then start a blank template.
- Add the fields you need, and set each one as a placeholder (variable) or as static (locked) text.
- Give every field a clear name, such as StockName, LotNumber or ExpiryDate. You'll see these names when you match fields in the app.
- Adjust the position and text size of each field, and turn on auto-fit.
- Save or export the template as a BWT file, somewhere you can open it from your phone or tablet, for example Google Drive.
Watch How to create a template in Brady Workstation.
Which fields you can use
| Field | How to set it up |
|---|---|
| Text | Set as a placeholder. Turn on wrap text so longer values fit. |
| Barcode | Set as a placeholder and choose the symbology: linear barcode, Data Matrix or QR code. Brady Workstation Custom Designer Lite offers linear barcodes only (compare editions). |
| Date and time | Use a text placeholder and match it to a date, such as the expiry date. Brady's own Date and Time field isn't supported. |
| Graphics | Supported as static (locked) images only, such as a logo. |
| Shapes and lines | Not supported. They won't appear on the printed label. |

Import a template
Templates you import are saved to your Labguru account, so everyone in the account can use them.
- On the template list, tap +, then Import a BWT file.
- Choose the BWT file you saved from Brady Workstation.
- Give the template a name and, optionally, a description.

Match template fields to stock information
Matching tells the app what to print in each placeholder. You set it once per template, and you can change it at any time.
- On the template list, open the template and tap Edit.
- Under Template fields, each field from Brady Workstation appears on the left, with the stock information it's matched to on the right. Fields that aren't matched yet show ?.
- Tap a field and choose the stock information to print in it. The value from the first selected stock appears next to each option, so you can see what will print. Custom fields from your Labguru account are listed too.
- Tap Save & Select template.
Note: Match a barcode field only to information it can encode, such as the stock ID or barcode. For example, Code 128 can't encode lowercase letters.
Troubleshooting
The app can't find my printer
- Make sure the app has Location and Bluetooth (on Android, Nearby devices) permissions.
- Check that Bluetooth is on, on both your device and the printer.
- For Wi-Fi, make sure your device and the printer are on the same network.
- Check that the printer is on and its battery isn't low.
- Only one person can connect to a printer at a time. If someone else is connected, wait for them to finish.
The label doesn't print as designed
- Unsupported objects: text on an arc, text art, image placeholders, color, and Date and Time objects aren't supported. See Brady supported objects.
- Wrong label size: make sure the template's dimensions match the printer and the label supply loaded in it.
- Fields are empty: make sure they're set as placeholders in Brady Workstation and matched to stock information in the app.
- Font looks different: make sure the fonts used in the template are installed on your device.
-
Barcode is empty or printing fails: the barcode field is matched to information it can't encode. On Android, the barcode stays empty. On iOS, the app may close. Match the field to other information, or change the barcode type:
- Code 128A: digits, uppercase letters, control codes and special characters
- Code 128B: digits, uppercase and lowercase letters, and special characters
- Code 128C: digits only
The printer has a hardware problem
- Check the printer's screen or error log for jams, mechanical faults or firmware errors.
- Check that the label supply and ribbon are installed correctly and aren't empty.
- See the printer's user manual for specific troubleshooting and maintenance steps.
